SALMON OIL AND FLAXSEED are natural sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a group of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Among omega-3 fatty acids, the most important are alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while among omega-6 fatty acids, the most important are linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid. Except for arachidonic acid, all of these are essential fatty acids for dogs, meaning that they cannot be synthesized in their bodies and must be obtained through the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for brain and retina function, while omega-6 fatty acids are essential for growth, reproduction, and as precursors to the synthesis of prostaglandins (cellular mediators necessary for the proper functioning of the nervous, cardiovascular, reproductive, and digestive systems). Both contribute to the fluidity of cell membranes and the health of the skin and coat, which act as barriers against environmental pathogens. The benefits of ingesting omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, considering that many of them are essential, are well known and include their effect on skin health, osteoarthritis, liver problems, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and even some types of cancer. Despite their benefits, it should also be noted that excess is as dangerous as deficiency, so extra supplementation is not recommended without veterinary prescription. Ideally, one should look for a formulated food that contains the necessary amounts to ensure adequate intake of omega-3 and omega-6.
