Around 10% of allergic dogs suffer from a food allergy. Contrary to common belief, within this percentage, only 3% are allergic to grains, while 35% have allergies to beef protein.
What are food allergies?
These are immune system reactions that occur after the ingestion of a specific protein. In other words, the body interprets a component of the food as a threat to the dog’s health and responds excessively. This reaction promotes the release of substances like histamine, triggering the allergic reaction.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of a food allergy primarily manifest on the skin, with excessive itching, redness, crusts, or chronic ear infections. From these symptoms, secondary issues can arise, such as infections, wounds, and hair loss. In addition to these, there are digestive symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and flatulence, although the latter are more common in cases of intolerance.
It should be noted that while these symptoms can occur at any age, they are more frequent in puppies and elderly dogs.
How is it diagnosed?
Food allergies are commonly confused with other diseases that present similar symptoms. That’s why if you suspect that your dog has a food allergy, you should consult a veterinarian to make the diagnosis and determine which food is causing this allergy.
The most common test performed in these cases involves conducting an elimination diet for several weeks, usually between 8 and 12 weeks. This method involves observing whether the symptoms disappear as elements of the dog’s diet are eliminated. If the symptoms disappear during this period, it indicates that the dog has an allergy. Additionally, blood tests can be used as a complement.
What is the ideal food?
Once the food causing the allergy is identified, you will only need to choose pet food, wet food, and/or snacks that do not include it.
